Crooked Birch Riding Holidays

At Crooked Birch we are passionate about our Horses and the Riding Country alike. That is why we hope to offer you the best opportunity to come and experience the Rides yourself. There is no better Holiday than one that you can share with your own horse. If you do decide to bring your horse as well as your family or partner to Crooked Birch, for the duration of your stay we can offer Livery options to suit you, because, its not only the Riding in Cumbria you have to experience but some of the other attractions the Lake District has to offer too.

As a group of friends you may decide to have a Riding Holiday and stay in one of our self catering suites for up to 6 people. Ride in the morning, stroll around the local villages in the afternoon and then experience freindly nightlife in the local towns.

During your stay you may wish to have some guidance in other areas of Riding. With experince at International Level and Competing in Show Jumping competitions accross the UK, Ireland, Belgium and France our family may just be able to help you with any queries you may have.

If you are unable to transport your Horse or would like to make a new friend, you can book a Trek on a day to day basis. Again, you may wish to care for him yourself, or leave the worries to us and just enjoy The Ride of Your Life.

When I first came to Crooked Birch Iwas amazed by the surroundings it sits in. On the drive in, as you wind around the side of Great Burney, the views over the Duddon Estuary and out to sea were breathtaking. All I could think of was what the view must be like from Horse Back, from the top of Great Burney itself. When I first Rode to the summit of Great Burney I was awestruck at the view that greeted me. I could see as far as Morcambe accross the Bay, The Old Man of Coniston loomed close enough to touch, Coniston Water sparkled under the rays of the Sun, and Scaffel Pike sat in the distance. I decided that Icouldnt possibly describe the view to anyone wishing to stay at Crooked Birch, so I decided to Photograph it. The view through the Horses ears. This is what Iwant you to see, what I saw. Through the Horses ears is a new concept in Riding Holiday promotion and it was developed right here at Crooked Birch - becuase at Crooked Birch The Ride of Your Life is made up of more than just You and Your Horse that you see in most other pictures..... Its You. Your Horse. About 250 metres of Cumbrian Hill. A pair of Horses ears. One Unrivalled view. This is The Ride of Your Life.....

The Hill Ride

Upon leaving Crooked Birch you will begin an ascent to the summit of Great Burney to experience panoramic views of The Old Man of Coniston, Dow Crag, Coniston Water, an uninterupted view to the Pennines, and Morcambe Bay. The ride continues to wind up and down the surrounding hills and picks up the Cumbrian way and an old Bridle way to weave around Blawith Knott.

2 Hour Ride

The 2 Hour Rides vary with thier exploration of old Cumbrian Bridleways and tracks. Our guides will take you along old tracks that look over to the Old Man of Coniston and surrounding fells. Ride through old farmyards and witness Cumbrian life real time.

All Day Rides

Varied to encompass all that the Subberthwaite valley and Woodland fells have to offer. Ride up summits of over 200 metres and marvel at the panoramic views. Also experince ol Bridleways and tracsk that lead over to the the local village of Torver. Ride over to Beacon tarn and rest for a few moments. Wade into the waters if you wish, then, if you feel brave enough, climb Beacon itslef to gaze the length of Coniston Water. Truly the Ride of Your Life......

At Crooked Birch we offer you the chance to Hire a Horse for the duration of your stay to Ride with our groups or to explore on your own. Your friend is specially selected to ensure that you can put your trust in him. We, unfortunately have to be sure that he can put his trust in you, and so, you will be asked to take part ina short assessment when you arrive to ensure that the both of you get on well together and will look after each other the way freinds should. The assessment is informal but neccessary to ensure both our Horses and your own saftey.

If you would like to Hire a Horse for your time with us then it would help us greatly if you would include some details of your experience with Horses when booking.

At Crooked Birch we would like nothing more than to accommodate you and your Horse so that you can both experience Riding here in Cumbria. Although we offer a friend to Hire for your stay nothing can beat sharing the views with your old friend of many years. If this is a practicle option for you then we recommend that you try and get your Horse as fit as possible because of the steep climbing involved, particularly if your Horse is not used to this. We also ask you to conisder if your Horse is good in company and confident in new surroundings.

If this is the case then we would love to have you both here to stay. We offer a number of Livery options to make your stay as hassle free as possible. Our full Livery options include Feed, Haylage, Bedding and Turning out but does not include Grooming or tacking up. With your Horse here to stay you can advantage of all the rides that Cumbria has to offer.

Price Guide

Whilst we do everything in our power to ensure the safety of our Guests and Horses, Horse Riding is a very high risk sport and Horses can be unpredictable. This must be accepted by our clients. We will ask you to confirm this before you ride. Whilst your safety is our prime concern it cannot be garunteed. Travel insurance for very high risk sports such as Horse Riding is recommended and riders are asked to be vigilant at all times.
